For many centuries, a cave served as a safe place for people, a place for secret rituals and even a portal to go to another dimension. Carlsbad Cavern is a favourite recreation area of millions of tourists and the brightest jewel of Carlsbad Caverns National Park in New Mexico, the USA. The underground cave system consists of 81 caves. Canyons, hills, grottos and valleys can be found here. The deepest cave of the cavern is Queens Chamber. It is located 230 meters below the surface, is 1 km long and 78 meters high. So, it is possible not only to walk in the grotto but also to take an elevator. Underground chambers are well-equipped with various stair passages, stairs and viewing platforms for comfortable walks. Here, tourists are also attracted by the unique Green Lake owing its name to the fairy emerald water. There is no other lake like that in any cave in the world.
Lascaux Caves is the setting of the complex of caves located in south-western France. It is famous for the well preserved oldest and finest prehistoric art in the world. Historians date them to the 5th century BC. It is a monument of Palaeolithic art, the cave was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1979. Most often depicted were animals hunted by humans: deer, bulls, horses, aurochs and bison. According to scientists, the ancient tribes used the cave for magic rituals. The Lascaux Caves consist of a number of chambers with small passages and galleries.
The Jeita Grotto Caves in Lebanon are famous for their deep-water underground river with rapids and waterfalls, as well as the largest in the world stalactite. The river length is 8 meters 20 centimetres. The general length of the underground caves system consisting of two huge chambers is 9 km. The Red Grotto and the White Grotto are interconnected with a passage, where you can swim only in a boat. The caves’ exploration is still ongoing. For many years, scientists could have only advanced for a few meters deep into the underworld. Several years ago the ancient foundry was found in one of the chambers. So, exploration of the Jeita Grotto Caves has many new discoveries for us in store yet.
