Oberammergau – an open-air museum in the heart of the Bavarian Alps

Oberammergau – an open-air museum in the heart of the Bavarian Alps

A two hour’s drive from Munich and you are at the wonderful place, where fairy tale and real life have been interweaved. For many years, the Alpine village of Oberammergau has been famous for its incredible frescoed houses. Of course, you can see such art in other Bavarian towns too. But such diversity of frescoes can be met only in Oberammergau. It looks like an open-air gallery.

Each house has its unique design. One the houses’ facades you can see depicted heroes of fairy tales Red Riding Hood or Hansel and Gretel, scenes from the Bible, original German ornaments and other motives. By the way, one of the oldest houses of Oberammergau keeps the inscription: “Anno Domini 1633.” This fresco is devoted to one of the most important events in the local history. This is the date when the citizens managed to beat the plague they had suffered greatly from in this part of the country. The happy news had been celebrated with a theatrical performance by locals. Since then, this tradition has been kept with a great honour. Almost half million of tourists come to see the performances devoted to the Bible scenes, which take place in Oberammergau every 10 years. Next time Oberammergau Passion Play will be held in 2020.

Speaking about the frescoes tradition, it is Franz Zwinck who is considered to be the founder of it. He was the first who decided to decorate a house with an ornament. It was the year of 1784. The citizens liked this idea greatly and started inviting Zwinck to paint frescoes on the houses nearby. Some people tried to create the same paintings by their own. Thus, Zwinck had become a father of the unique art, which in Upper Bavaria has become known as Lüftlmalerei.

The most beautiful building in Oberammergau – Pilatushaus – contains part of the Collection behind Glass, which is considered as the largest one in Europe. The exhibition is part of the Oberammergau Museum, where art of carving is presented. Looking at the great number of souvenir shops with plenty of goods you can understand how much the local craftsmen have succeeded in it. But the highest craftsmanship is the interior of Sts Peter and Paul Church made in wood covered with gold.

Holidays in Oberammergau without a ride with the Laber Ropeway won’t be complete. The ropeway will bring you straight to the top of Laber Mountain. The sightseeing platform is situated on the height of 1684 metres. From here you’ll see picturesque lakes, mountains and other sceneries. Here, on the peak, a cosy restaurant is situated, where guests are treated with dishes of local cuisine. Its terrace opens a fantastic view of Oberammergau.
